The Bead Shop

For my full time job I work in The Birmingham Bead Shop at The Custard Factoy in Birmingham. I am the envy of the majority of our customers who regularly tell me I have the best job in the world. Don't get me wrong, there is work to be done, but it's always great to see peoples reactions after they realise how easy it is to make a piece of jewellery.

I find that one of the most challenging aspects of my job is convincing people to trust their own opinions. I'm often asked what colours or beads will go together and I love giving our customers my opinion, but I'm always trying to get them to realise that their thoughts are much more important than anyone elses. I believe this is true whether your making for yourself or to sell to other people. It's tempting to only make things that are fashionable and copy already existing designs, but if you have developed an idea and created something unique yourself the passion and work is obvious, and people will be drawn to it and want to be part of that creativity.

It's scary doing something different, and it's always hard to muster up the confidence to put something personal into the public domain, but it's worth it. If you don't try you will never know. Trust me, after your first few "where did you get that necklace/ring/bracelet" there will be no stopping you!

  1. That does sound like a fun job! And I love that you tell people to go with their own instinct, instead of always giving them advice:)

    And cute blog!

  2. Thank you so much! I am very lucky to work somewhere I can be creative everyday, and encourage others to be as well.
